My Reflection
On our first day of EU423, our professor asked us to share our positive experiences of Physical Education and that was probably one of the hardest tasks I ever had to complete because I did not have many positive experiences. Then, she asked us to think of any negative experiences and I was able to fill the page. On that very first day of class, I did not think that I would be able to let go of that negative view on Physical Education, but after five weeks I have changed my views on Physical Education and I think it is an excellent opportunity for students and that it should remain mandatory in all schools.
As a future teacher, I plan on providing my students with quality Health and Physical Education so that they can learn to become healthy and active for the rest of their lives. I want my students to be health and physical literate, so that they can make the correct judgments when it comes to living a healthy life. I want my students to not only know the how to perform the fundamental movement skills, but also be confident in performing them.
Through this course, I have learned that it is important to teach students the fundamental movement skills (throwing, running, kicking, striking, jumping, balance, catching, and other locomotor skills) because these skills allow students to participate in other activities and sports, which will help them to stay active, as they get older. Teaching them these skills allows students to participate in the activities that they will enjoy to play. For exampling, Dodge Ball is a game that many students love to play, and in that game students need to know how to throw in order to participate. When teaching these skills, I think it is also important to incorporate the skills in activities, so that students can have fun while learning.
When assessing students it is important to provide them with descriptive feedback, and you can do this by telling them what they did well on and also telling them where they can improve. Tell students what they did well on helps build their confidence in Physical Education, and this confidence will encourage them to remain active for the rest of their lives. A good way to assess students is through pictures and videos, so that you can review their performance and you also show them how they did. Assessment in physical education gives students the opportunity to learn how to perform the skills well, so that they can continue to participate in sports and activities outside of school.
Overall, I learned that Health and Physical Education is a necessary subject to have in schools because it teaches students how to be healthy and active for their rest of their lives. Obesity has become a big problem in today’s work, and Health and Physical Education can help decrease obesity rates in Canada because students will become health and physical literate. If teachers provide students with quality daily physical activity they will gain the confidence to participate in activities and sports that will help them to live healthy lives. Students are our main priority, and I think as long as we put the students at the centre of our lessons then we can help them to enjoy staying active and healthy. Health and Physical Education is important because it not only helps the physical aspect of the child but it also helps the whole child.
